FAQ and leather Care
We get lots of questions about our satchels, and one of the most regular is "how do i take care of my purchase?". Well, its pretty straightforward...
Goat Hide Satchels and Duffle bags:
Urban Safari Bags are made using a process called vegetable tanning, which is one of the oldest and most traditional ways of tanning leather. Following the tanning and construction of the bags, Linseed oil is applied to seal the leather, keeping it supple and preventing any cracking. It also helps give the leather its unique aged look, and brings out the natural chestnut colour we love. As a result, the bags are pretty well set up to start with, so treating your satchel isn't absolutely necessary, but like any good leather item which is likely to see lots of use, you can use products such as leather waterproofing spray, or a good quality wax. Our satchels are created to have a natural aged look to them and we find that this only improves with use and time without treating the leather, but of course its all down to personal preference.
Cow Hide Small Leather Goods, Wallets and Card Holders:
These are made from premium pebbled cow hide, the colour is set into the leather at after tanning and they require no treatment at all. As with all leather we don't recommend you get them really wet but they are water resistant and can be wiped clean. Simple!
Other Frequently Asked Questions:
"What size satchel is best for me?"
It depends what you're looking to use it for. All of our satchels are unisex, and built with both style and functionality in mind. If it's to carry a laptop, we'd almost certainly always recommend opting for one of our larger 16 inch bags, which are built with this in mind. All of these will easily fit a standard 15 inch machine, with a laptop cover on, with space to spare for extras, whilst never feeling bulky. If its a more general day bag, for things like phone, keys, book, wallet and tablet or kindle, then the smaller 13 or inch bags are ideal.
All of our satchels have one or more interior compartments, and at least one zipped interior section for extra security too. We've recently introduced an even more compact bag based on feedback from you guys - the rather handsome Henley Satchel, which comes in at 11"x 9" and covers all these bases too. We're always happy to answer individual enquiries on sizing however.
"How does goat hide differ from other leathers?"
Goat hide differs from other leathers in many ways. All leathers have their own unique characteristics, and generally its a case of finding the right one for the right job. Some can be very smooth and soft - ideal for small goods, but not so good for hardwearing items like bags. We choose to use goat hide as it's not only one of the most durable materials for the job, but it's also one of the most attractive leathers in terms of its character. When we set out to create a range of satchels and bags that had a naturally aged and vintage look to them, goat hide was our first choice. Each hide has its own markings and colouration, which translates to give each piece its own individuality. We hope you take as much enjoyment from the character of these bags as we do.
"What makes Urban Safari different?"
In addition to the care we take over the whole process as outlined above, we're also big fans of using quality components. All of our bags utilise heavy duty burnished brass buckles, rivets and only high quality zips. Not only does this mean they last a lot longer, they also look much better and compliment the natural colour of the leather. For the interior of the bags we use strong khaki canvas lining, and have added some light padding into the interior compartments of the laptop size satchels for extra protection for your machine too. Along with a great bag, you can also expect first class service from us, so please don't hesitate to get in touch with any questions.
"What is your returns policy?"
Take a look at our returns page, where we've outlined all you need to know in the event of wanting to return an item.
"Are you designing more products?"
We've just released the first of our new range of premium cow hide products! As with our existing range, the emphasis is on classic pieces that aren't trend led, and will look great with whatever you're wearing. We've chosen to use soft pebbled cow hide this time for the flexibility it offers. We're really proud of the design and quality of the range so far, and your feedback has been great.
We've always believed in offering fair prices for our goods, and whilst most premium leather goods of this type are marked up to many times their production cost, we're keeping things accessible while delivering the best possible quality. We think they give most of the bigger labels a very good run for their money and we hope you enjoy using them as much as we did designing them.
Follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for regular updates - we've got more exciting additions to the range in 2017.
